The pairing of calligraphy and painting in this late Qing album reveals the full range of Xugu's artistic voice — precise, contemplative, and quietly unconventional. Xugu (1823–1896) was a Buddhist monk who became one of the most distinctive painters of the Shanghai School, working in a style that fused the classical scholar-painting tradition with something more angular and personal. Where his contemporaries favoured loose, spontaneous brushwork, Xugu built his images through deliberate, slightly stilted strokes that give his goldfish, squirrels, pine branches, and wisteria an unusual stillness. This album pairs his characteristic ink painting with calligraphic inscriptions — a traditional format he used to weave image and text into a single meditative whole, allowing each leaf to function as both picture and poem. Xugu was famously reluctant to sell his work during his lifetime, preferring to give paintings to friends and Buddhist temples, which kept his output genuinely intimate rather than commercially shaped. Our hand-painted oil reproduction translates the quiet rhythm of ink and diluted colour into oil on canvas, preserving the delicate tonal contrasts and the composed, unhurried energy that make this album one of the more singular objects in the Art Institute of Chicago's East Asian collection.
