This album leaf captures the quiet refinement of late Qing literati art, where brushwork and inscription exist in a kind of dialogue — each giving weight to the other. Xugu was one of the most distinctive voices of nineteenth-century Chinese painting, a Buddhist monk who trained under the Shanghai School and developed a style at once economical and deeply expressive. His compositions favoured simple subjects — goldfish, squirrels, prunus blossoms — rendered with a looseness that felt almost casual but was the product of extraordinary control. Ink and light colour on paper was his preferred medium, and he used it to suggest texture and atmosphere rather than describe them directly. The calligraphic inscriptions that accompany his paintings are not decorative additions but integral to the work, continuing the visual rhythm of the brushstrokes into language. Xugu's work entered Western collections relatively late, but the Art Institute of Chicago holds one of the finest examples of his album format — intimate in scale, expansive in feeling. This hand-painted oil reproduction translates the restraint and delicacy of the original into oil on canvas, preserving the tonal subtlety and the balance between image and text that makes Xugu's work so quietly arresting.
