A quiet domestic moment rendered with real tenderness, Henry Stacy Marks's *Cat on Doorstep* captures the unhurried stillness that defines a cat entirely at home in the world. Marks was a prominent Victorian painter and Royal Academy member best known for his warmly humorous animal and genre subjects. Later in his career he became particularly devoted to painting birds and cats with a close observer's eye, bringing genuine affection rather than sentimentality to his animal subjects.
