"Christ on the Living Cross" is a quietly arresting devotional panel in which the cross appears not as dead timber but as a living, green-branched tree — an image freighted with centuries of theological meaning, connecting Christ's sacrifice to the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. The anonymous artist worked in close imitation of the Master of Saint Veronica, a Cologne painter of the early fifteenth century renowned for exquisitely tender sacred figures, luminous flesh tones, and meticulous surface detail. That school of late Gothic German painting prized intimate scale and spiritual immediacy over monumental statement, producing small panels designed for private devotion and contemplative prayer. The technique draws on refined oil and tempera traditions, layering translucent glazes to achieve the soft, warm glow characteristic of Rhenish work from this period. The living or flowering cross — known in Latin as the *crux viridans* — appears throughout medieval devotional art as a symbol of redemption and renewed life, and its presence here lends the composition an unusual tenderness rarely found in more formally composed crucifixion scenes. The painting now resides in the Art Institute of Chicago, and our hand-painted oil reproduction is executed by skilled painters working from high-resolution reference material, capturing the warm ochres, precise gilding, and quiet spiritual gravity of the original panel.
