Commanding yet intimate, this equestrian portrait captures Lord Simpson with the confident stillness that defined formal portraiture of the Georgian era, rider and horse rendered with equal dignity against an open sky. Joshua Dighton came from one of Britain's most recognisable artistic dynasties — the Dighton family produced caricaturists, portrait draughtsmen, and military illustrators across several generations, and Joshua inherited both the sharp observational eye and the facility with watercolor that marked their work. Here he pushes beyond caricature into something more considered: the selective varnishing over watercolor and gouache gives the composition unusual depth, with highlighted passages catching light in a way more typical of oil than of works on paper. Laying the sheet onto gray board was a deliberate structural choice, lending weight and permanence to what might otherwise feel ephemeral. The original is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, which preserves a notable group of British portrait drawings from this period. Our hand-painted oil reproduction translates Dighton's layered luminosity onto canvas, preserving the tonal subtlety of the original medium while giving the image the physical presence it deserves on a wall — a faithful tribute to a work that rewards closer looking than most equestrian portraits of its time.
