Painted in dappled light and loose, confident strokes, Forêt de Compiègne captures a quiet corner of woodland outside Paris with the kind of immediacy that only a plein air sensibility can produce. Berthe Morisot was the first woman to exhibit with the core Impressionist group and remained one of its most committed voices throughout the movement's defining decade. Where many of her peers gravitated toward cafés and crowds, Morisot consistently found her subject matter in quieter spaces — gardens, interiors, and wooded landscapes like this one. Her brushwork here is characteristically energetic, building texture through layered marks rather than blended tones, giving the foliage a trembling, alive quality. Morisot exhibited at seven of the eight Impressionist exhibitions, a record that reflects both her conviction in the movement and her standing among its founding circle.
