Ghost Dance (The Vision of Life) is one of Blakelock's most haunting and spiritually charged works — a shimmering nocturnal scene that feels less like a document of ceremony than a window into collective dreaming. Ralph Albert Blakelock occupied a strange and solitary place in American art. Working largely outside the academic mainstream, he developed a deeply personal approach to landscape and figure painting, building up surfaces with thick, jewel-like impasto to create glowing, luminescent effects that seem to emanate light from within. His Native American subjects were treated not as ethnographic curiosity but as vehicles for exploring the mystical and the invisible. Blakelock's life unravelled as his reputation grew — he suffered a breakdown in 1891 and spent nearly two decades institutionalised, during which time his earlier canvases were being forged and sold by unscrupulous dealers who recognised their rising value. This hand-painted oil reproduction honours the tonal depth and textural richness of the original, replicating the layered glazes and impasto passages that give Blakelock's vision its peculiar inner glow — qualities that no print reproduction can come close to conveying.
