Group of People on a Terrace presents a moment of cultivated leisure rendered with the quiet precision that defined Jacob Philipp Hackert's eye for the classical Italian landscape. Hackert, the German-born painter who became one of the most celebrated landscape artists of the eighteenth century, spent the bulk of his career in Italy, eventually serving as court painter to Ferdinand IV of Naples. This work on paper — built up through pen and brown ink, wash, graphite, and traces of white gouache — demonstrates his characteristic layering of tone and light, balancing architectural structure with the natural ease of figures at rest. His draughtsmanship was meticulous without ever feeling cold, a quality that made him a favourite among both aristocratic patrons and serious collectors. Goethe, who knew Hackert personally, thought highly enough of him to write a biography of the artist, published posthumously in 1811 — a rare honour that speaks to how seriously Hackert was regarded in his own time. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates the warmth and tonal depth of the original into a medium that rewards close looking, bringing the terrace scene to life with the texture and presence that only paint on canvas can provide.
