Menzel catches his subjects at their most unguarded — slumped, drowsy, lit by the grey wash of early morning light filtering through a railway compartment. Adolph von Menzel was the foremost German realist of the nineteenth century, a painter obsessed with modern life at a time when most of his contemporaries still looked to history and mythology. His use of mixed media here — gouache layered with touches of pastel and oil — gives the scene an almost atmospheric softness unusual for his otherwise precise hand. Menzel worked constantly in sketchbooks and on paper, capturing the textures of industrial-age Germany with a directness that felt radical for its moment. The railway was a subject Menzel returned to repeatedly; his famous 1847 painting of a Berlin iron-rolling mill cemented his reputation as the painter of modernity, and this quieter carriage study shows the same eye turned toward the human cost of a world in motion.
