Walter Greaves's 1869 portrait of James McNeill Whistler offers an intimate glimpse into one of art history's most singular friendships, painted with the quiet reverence of a devoted disciple looking at his master. Greaves was the son of a Chelsea boatman who had once ferried J.M.W. Turner along the Thames, and he fell into Whistler's orbit as a young man, learning to row the American painter across the river by night and, in return, learning to paint. He absorbed Whistler's tonal sensibility so thoroughly that his works were later confused with Whistler's own — a flattery that ultimately clouded Greaves's reputation rather than elevating it. This portrait, rendered in muted, carefully observed tones, captures something of that apprentice's gaze: attentive, admiring, seeking to hold the subject still. In 1907, Greaves was discovered living in poverty at the Charterhouse almshouse while a London dealer was exhibiting dozens of his paintings under Whistler's name — a scandal that briefly rescued him from obscurity before fading again into art-historical footnotes. This hand-painted oil reproduction renders the portrait's restrained palette and intimate scale with the same care that Greaves himself brought to the canvas, giving collectors a faithful connection to the original held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
