Gerard David's *Lamentation over the Body of Christ* is a quietly devastating work — tender in feeling, precise in every fold of cloth and streak of grief across the mourners' faces. David was the last great master of the Bruges school of Early Netherlandish painting, a tradition built on meticulous observation and the extraordinary capacity of oil on panel to render light soaking into flesh and fabric alike. Where some of his contemporaries leaned toward drama, David held back, letting stillness do the work. His figures mourn with a restrained dignity that makes the scene feel private rather than theatrical, as though the viewer has stumbled into a moment not meant to be witnessed. He was admitted to the Bruges painters' guild in 1484 and eventually rose to serve as its dean — a measure of the esteem in which his peers held him, even as the Italian Renaissance was beginning to pull European taste in a different direction. This hand-painted oil reproduction is made using the same medium David chose: oil paint, worked slowly, in layers, by a skilled artist whose eye is trained on the original. The result is a piece with genuine physical presence — not a print, but a painting you can stand in front of and feel.
