George Inness's *Landscape, Sunset* dissolves the boundary between the visible world and something harder to name — a glowing horizon that feels less observed than felt. By the late 1880s, Inness had long moved beyond the tight topographical detail of his Hudson River School contemporaries. A devoted follower of Emanuel Swedenborg's spiritual philosophy, he believed landscape painting should express inner states rather than document outer ones. In works like this, he achieved that through layered, feathery brushwork and a palette of molten golds and softened blues, building atmosphere until form itself seems to breathe. The result sits somewhere between representation and reverie. Inness is said to have painted outdoors only to study nature, then completed his canvases in the studio — trusting memory and feeling over literal transcription, which accounts for the dreamlike coherence his late paintings share. This hand-painted oil reproduction is made using traditional materials on canvas, with each layer of colour applied and built up by hand, preserving the warm luminosity and gestural softness that make the original, now held at the Art Institute of Chicago, so quietly transporting.
