Lights of Other Days is one of John Frederick Peto's most quietly affecting still lifes, gathering worn kerosene lamps and faded objects into a meditation on time and memory. Peto worked in the trompe-l'œil tradition alongside his better-known contemporary William Harnett, but where Harnett favoured polished, precise surfaces, Peto leaned into decay — cracked varnish, peeling labels, surfaces rubbed soft by use. His compositions feel less like displays and more like accumulations, things kept because they meant something to someone. That emotional undertow runs through this canvas: the lamps have burned out, but their presence lingers. For much of the twentieth century Peto was largely forgotten, with many of his paintings misattributed to Harnett until art historian Alfred Frankenstein untangled their work in the 1940s, restoring Peto's reputation and rightful place in American art history. Held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, the original rewards close attention — the handling of matte and reflective surfaces, the subdued palette, the sense of stillness without emptiness. A hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas captures that same layered quality: the texture, the tonal depth, and the unhurried care that makes Peto's work feel so different from a photograph of objects and so much closer to a feeling.
