This intimate portrait of Lucrezia del Fede — Andrea del Sarto's wife, identified here by her family lineage — carries the quiet authority of someone who knew the painter better than almost anyone. Del Sarto was among the most technically accomplished painters of the Florentine High Renaissance, admired by contemporaries for the seamless blending of his brushwork and his instinct for naturalistic light. Working in oil on panel during the late 1520s, he brought the same luminous handling to portraiture that distinguished his altarpieces — the flesh tones settle with warmth, the fabrics have weight, and nothing feels laboured. Where many of his peers leaned toward idealization, del Sarto maintained an honest closeness to his subjects. Lucrezia served repeatedly as the model for del Sarto's Madonnas and sacred figures, making her face one of the most painted of the Italian Renaissance — a fact Vasari noted with some ambivalence in his biography of the artist. Our hand-painted oil reproduction is executed on artist-grade canvas by a specialist in Renaissance technique, preserving the tonal subtlety and calm psychological presence that have made this portrait one of the Art Institute of Chicago's quieter treasures.
