Mon Ancien Régiment is a quietly moving tribute to soldierly camaraderie, depicting French infantrymen pausing to watch a regiment march past — their faces carrying a mixture of pride and nostalgia that feels immediate even across 140 years. Édouard Detaille trained under Ernest Meissonier, the master of French military genre painting, and inherited his teacher's obsession with accuracy. Detaille sketched directly from soldiers, studied uniforms with near-scholarly rigour, and brought to his brushwork a precision that stops well short of coldness — his figures breathe. Painted in 1881, just a decade after France's humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, the work carries a melancholy undertone that contemporaries would have felt viscerally; this is not triumphalism but remembrance. Detaille kept meticulous reference files on military dress and equipment, and French regiments reportedly considered it an honour to be painted by him. This hand-painted oil reproduction preserves every detail Detaille laboured over — the texture of woollen uniforms, the subtle gradation of a winter sky, the weight of men who have marched too many roads — rendered by a skilled artist working directly in oil on canvas, as Detaille himself did.
