MacPherson's depiction of the State Opening of Parliament under Edward VII captures one of Edwardian Britain's great ceremonial occasions with the precision and drama that made illustrated journalism the visual news media of its age. Douglas MacPherson worked primarily as a staff illustrator for the major London pictorial press, and this work exemplifies the demanding craft behind those seemingly effortless double-page spreads — pen and ink laid over careful graphite underdrawing, with white gouache lifted in to create luminosity in the robes, regalia, and candlelight that no pure ink line could achieve. The ivory wove card support gave him a warm, stable ground suited to fine detail at scale. Works like this were produced under tight deadlines, intended for engraver's reproduction rather than gallery walls, which makes the confidence and completeness of the draughtsmanship all the more striking. The piece is now held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, recognised as a significant document of Edwardian ceremonial life as much as a work of illustrative art. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates MacPherson's intricate tonal contrasts and the grandeur of the composition into the richer, deeper medium of oil on canvas, giving the scene a permanence the original press illustration was never meant to have.
