Painted during Lockwood de Forest's formative travels through the Mediterranean, this small oil on card captures a Greek sky at its most theatrical — clouds loosened across a burning orange horizon with the economy of a master sketch. De Forest studied under Frederic Church and carried the Hudson River School's reverence for atmospheric light into the landscapes of Southern Europe and the Near East. Working on card rather than canvas, he favoured rapid, direct studies that locked in the quality of light before it shifted — a practice that gives this piece its remarkable freshness and intimacy. The warm tonality and loose cloud handling show a painter fully at ease translating the particular intensity of Aegean light into paint. De Forest travelled widely through Egypt, Syria, and Greece during the late 1870s, and these journeys produced some of his most admired plein-air studies, now held in major American collections including the Art Institute of Chicago. The hand-painted oil reproduction faithfully renders the warm ochres and luminous sky of the original, produced by skilled artists using traditional oil techniques on archival-quality materials — giving you the texture and presence of a nineteenth-century study that no print can replicate.
