This gouache drawing captures the ornate ambition of Victorian civic architecture — a meticulous wall stencil design for the Ottawa Opera House, rendered with the precision of a craftsman who understood that decoration was as structural to a building as its beams. Peter Bonnett Wight was one of the leading American architects of the High Victorian era, best known for his National Academy of Design building in New York and his deep engagement with the Gothic Revival principles championed by John Ruskin. Wight believed architecture should be honest about its materials and expressive in its ornament, and this working design reflects that philosophy — pattern and geometry in careful dialogue. Executed in gouache, the drawing has a richness of tone that reads almost like a finished artwork, not merely a technical document.
