This panel's serene bishop saint — rendered with the quiet gravity of mid-fifteenth-century Italian devotional painting — once formed part of a larger altarpiece celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin, its gold ground and careful drapery still commanding attention across six centuries. Created by an Italian workshop during a pivotal moment in Western art, the work reflects the transitional technique of the period: the panel combines egg tempera with oil, a pairing that allowed painters to achieve the crisp line and jewel-like colour of the older tradition while beginning to explore the blended luminosity that oil alone would later make possible. The bishop's vestments, rendered with the patient attention to surface and texture that characterised the best workshop production of the era, speak to a culture in which sacred image-making was itself a form of devotion. The mixed tempera-and-oil technique used here mirrors the approach documented in several Italian centres during the 1450s to 1470s, as Flemish methods gradually filtered south and painters experimented with both mediums on the same panel. Our hand-painted oil reproduction honours that layered tradition, recreating the warmth of the original's pigments and the subtle modelling of the saint's features with the same care and deliberate brushwork the anonymous master brought to the panel five centuries ago.
