Painted around 1495 for the high altar of a Carthusian monastery in northern France, this panel radiates the quiet spiritual intensity that defined late medieval devotional art at its most accomplished. French painting of this period absorbed the technical rigour of Flemish masters — the deep, luminous shadows, meticulous drapery folds, and jewel-like palette that set Netherlandish oil technique apart from anything produced further south. The anonymous artist behind these Thuison panels worked within that tradition with considerable skill, rendering the upward gaze of the apostles and the gold-suffused light around the ascending Christ with a tenderness that feels personal rather than formulaic. The panels were created for the Charterhouse of Saint-Honoré, a Carthusian house near Abbeville, where contemplative monks would have spent hours before this image in silent prayer. The altarpiece was eventually dispersed, and several of its surviving panels are now held at the Art Institute of Chicago, where they remain among the finest examples of late 15th-century French religious painting in any American collection. A hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas preserves what photographs cannot — the warmth of the original brushwork, the layered depth of the flesh tones, and the subtlety of a palette built up glaze by glaze across five centuries.
