Dappled with Mediterranean light and heavy with the scent of ripening fruit, Thomas Fearnley's *Pergola with Oranges* is one of the most quietly radiant works to emerge from the Norwegian Romantic tradition's Italian sojourn. Fearnley spent extended periods in Italy during the 1830s, absorbing the southern light that northern European painters of his generation travelled great distances to find. Trained under Johan Christian Dahl in Dresden and deeply influenced by the broader Romantic landscape movement, he had a gift for capturing transient, atmospheric moments with economy and warmth. The choice of oil on paper — a format associated with open-air sketching — gives this work a freshness and spontaneity that more formal studio paintings rarely achieve, the brushwork loose enough to feel immediate yet precise enough to render the pergola's dappled shade with conviction. Fearnley died young, at just forty, leaving a relatively small body of work that has grown steadily in critical esteem; the Art Institute of Chicago's holdings represent some of the finest examples outside Scandinavia.
