Painted from the meadows surrounding his Giverny property, this shimmering field study captures Monet at the height of his mature Impressionist vision. By 1890, Monet had lived at Giverny for seven years and was exploring the French countryside with an obsessive focus on atmospheric light — the same period that produced his celebrated Haystacks series. In Poppy Field (Giverny), the red blooms dissolve into loose, energetic brushwork, the landscape reading less as a record of place than as a study in colour temperature and vibration. What looks effortless was the result of sustained observation: Monet routinely returned to the same motif across different hours and seasons, building an understanding of how light transformed everything he saw. The painting now holds a prominent place in the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the finest collections of Impressionist work outside France, where it has been studied and admired for generations.
