Portrait of a Gentleman radiates the quiet authority that defined Florentine portraiture at the height of the Renaissance — the subject's steady gaze and composed bearing speak of a man entirely comfortable in his own dignity. Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, son of the celebrated Domenico, trained in Florence and came of age surrounded by the innovations of Leonardo and Raphael. That dual inheritance shows clearly in this work: the precise modelling of the face draws on the careful tradition of his father's workshop, while the psychological depth and soft atmospheric quality around the figure reflect a more modern sensibility. The mixed technique — oil with possible tempera underpaint on panel, later transferred to canvas — speaks to a period of genuine experimentation in Italian painting. Ridolfo was widely regarded in his own lifetime as one of Florence's finest portrait painters, praised by Vasari for his ability to capture likeness without sacrificing warmth or life.
