Simon Jacques Rochard was a French-born artist who established himself in London as one of the most sought-after portraitists of his era. Though primarily celebrated for his miniatures on ivory, his larger oil works demonstrate the same meticulous attention to skin tone, fabric texture, and the subtle play of light that made him a favourite among fashionable society. Working in London during the Regency and early Victorian periods, Rochard occupied a space between the intimacy of miniature painting and the grander tradition of formal portraiture, and that tension gives his oils an unusual warmth. Rochard exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1815 onward, building a clientele that spanned the British aristocracy and visiting European nobility. This hand-painted oil reproduction is executed with the same slow, layered process used in the original — no digital printing, no shortcuts — so the luminosity of the complexion and the depth of the dark background translate faithfully onto canvas, making it a piece that rewards close attention just as the original does.
