Modigliani spent most of his short career in the Montparnasse neighbourhood of Paris, absorbing influences from African sculpture, Cézanne, and the Italian primitives he had studied in his youth. The result was a style unmistakably his own: simplified, lyrical forms, warm earth tones, and those famously blank almond eyes — a deliberate choice that invites the viewer to project feeling rather than read it. Working on cardboard rather than canvas, as he often did out of financial necessity, he achieved a surface quality that is matte and immediate, closer to fresco than to conventional oil painting. Modigliani completed the work in the final years of his life, a period of intense productivity before his death in 1920 at the age of thirty-five.
