This intimate portrait captures the quiet dignity of an unknown English woman at the turn of the nineteenth century, rendered with a delicacy that belies the small scale on which it was almost certainly conceived. Created around 1800 by an unidentified English artist, the work belongs to a flourishing tradition of intimate portraiture that coincided with the golden age of British miniature painting. The choice of oil on ivory — rather than the more common watercolour on vellum — gives the flesh tones a luminous warmth and allows for subtle gradations of light across the sitter's white dress, a garment that itself speaks to the Neoclassical fashions sweeping England at the time. The loose, high-waisted muslin gown reflects the influence of ancient Greek and Roman dress that had become synonymous with refined femininity in Regency circles. The work is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the foremost repositories of British portrait miniatures outside the United Kingdom.
