This dynamic study of a rearing horse captures the raw energy and muscular tension that defined Romantic equestrian painting in early nineteenth-century France. Attributed to a close follower of Théodore Géricault, the work reflects the master's distinctive approach: horses rendered not as decorative symbols of power but as living, volatile creatures with their own psychological presence. The follower clearly absorbed Géricault's method of working from direct observation, building form through dense, confident brushwork and a muted palette that gives the animal weight and credibility on the canvas. The date range of 1808–12 places it squarely within Géricault's most intense period of equestrian study, when he was producing rapid sketches and finished oils of horses with almost obsessive dedication — a body of work that would directly inform his later masterpieces. Géricault himself was known to spend extended periods at stables and military depots, insisting on painting horses from life rather than from academic convention or other artists' compositions. Our hand-painted oil reproduction faithfully renders the loose, expressive brushwork and tonal depth of the original, so the energy Géricault's circle captured in the early 1800s comes through just as vividly on your wall.
