Pissarro settled in Pontoise in 1872 and returned repeatedly over the following decade, treating its fields, hillsides, and rural pathways as an endlessly renewable subject. This 1879 canvas shows the terrain blanketed in snow, the light diffuse and soft, the palette drawn down to silvery whites, pale ochres, and the cold blue-grey of the sky. His brushwork is restrained and deliberate — building surface texture without calling attention to itself — allowing the composition's quiet rhythm to carry the emotional weight.
