This unfinished architectural perspective drawing captures the grandeur of civic ambition in late nineteenth-century Germany, its incomplete state lending it an almost ghost-like quality where ink and wash dissolve into bare paper. Peter Joseph Weber worked in the tradition of meticulous German architectural draughtsmanship, using a combination of graphite underdrawing, ink linework, watercolor washes, and tempera highlights to build up the illusion of stone, light, and depth. This layered approach — common among serious architectural presenters of the era — demanded considerable technical discipline, and what makes this sheet remarkable is how much presence it achieves despite never being completed. The spatial confidence of the perspective construction is evident even where the rendering falls away.
