Reflected Reeds captures the quiet stillness of a marsh at the precise moment when water and sky become indistinguishable from one another, the reeds anchoring the composition like a whispered signature. Alfred Thompson Bricher was one of the most accomplished American Luminist painters of the nineteenth century, best known for his coastal oils, but his watercolors reveal an equally assured hand. Here he works on blue wove paper — a deliberate choice that lets the sheet itself stand in for the cool tones of water and atmosphere, reducing the need to paint what the ground already provides. The white gouache, applied sparingly as highlights, gives the reed tips and surface reflections a delicate luminosity that watercolor alone cannot achieve. Bricher was a founding member of the American Watercolor Society, and works like this one demonstrate why his peers held his facility with the medium in such regard.
