Robert Brown of Newhall presents its subject with the quiet authority that defines Raeburn at the height of his powers — a composed Scottish gentleman rendered in warm, flickering light against a dark ground. Sir Henry Raeburn was Edinburgh's preeminent portrait painter in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, working at a time when Scottish identity was being reshaped by Enlightenment thinking and romantic nationalism. He was largely self-taught, and his technique reflects it: broad, confident brushwork — sometimes called his "square touch" — that captures likeness and character simultaneously without laboring the surface. His handling of light, drawing the face forward from deep shadow, owes a debt to Rembrandt but arrives somewhere entirely his own. Raeburn painted directly onto canvas without preliminary sketches, which gives his best portraits an immediacy that more academic painters could rarely match. This directness is especially visible in works from his 1790s period, when his style was fully formed but not yet formulaic. Now held in the Art Institute of Chicago, the original has been admired for its restrained elegance and psychological presence.
