This luminous panel painting presents Saint Agatha with the quiet gravity typical of late Gothic Catalan devotional art — her gaze serene, her martyrdom acknowledged rather than dramatised. The Vergós Workshop operated in Barcelona during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, working in a mode shaped by Flemish realism filtered through Spanish Gothic sensibility. Their technique combined tempera underpaint with oil glazes on a gilded ground, giving figures like Agatha their characteristic warmth and solidity. The gold background here is not merely decorative — it places the saint outside ordinary time, in the eternal space of sacred imagery, while the careful modelling of her face and hands anchors her firmly in the human world. Saint Agatha, a third-century Sicilian martyr, became one of the most widely venerated saints in the medieval Mediterranean, and images like this one would have served as focal points for personal and communal prayer in Catalan households and chapels. The hand-painted oil reproduction is executed on canvas using the same layering approach as the original — oil glazes built up slowly to achieve depth of colour — bringing the gold tones, cool flesh, and subtle drapery of this five-hundred-year-old devotional work into faithful correspondence with the panel still held at the Art Institute of Chicago.
