Samuel Prout's *Square in Aix-en-Provence* captures the sun-worn architecture of southern France with the quiet authority of an artist who understood stone better than almost anyone of his era. Prout (1783–1852) built his reputation travelling through France, Germany, Italy, and the Low Countries, filling sketchbooks with the crumbling façades and animated street life of Continental towns. His preferred technique — graphite underdrawn, then layered with wash and lifted with white gouache — gave his architectural studies a luminous depth that pure line could never achieve. The tan paper itself becomes part of the composition, reading as warm ambient light in the shadows and mid-tones. John Ruskin, who rarely lavished praise carelessly, singled out Prout as the supreme interpreter of aged European architecture, arguing that no other artist so honestly conveyed the texture of time on a building's face. Because the original is a work on paper — delicate, light-sensitive, and held behind glass at the Art Institute of Chicago — most people will never experience its warmth at close range.
