Thomas Eakins trained under Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris before returning to Philadelphia with a deep commitment to empirical realism. His method was rigorous: he studied anatomy, worked from life without idealisation, and used every preparatory sketch as genuine problem-solving rather than decoration. This study for his celebrated 1877 composition captures that process directly — the controlled light, the sculptural weight of form, and the sober palette all visible in an undisguised working state. The finished William Rush painting sparked controversy in Philadelphia for its unapologetic nude figure; Eakins considered the life study so central to artistic integrity that he returned to the Rush subject multiple times across his career, treating it almost as a personal manifesto.
