George Hitchcock's *The Annunciation* (1887) is one of the most visually arresting reinterpretations of a biblical subject in nineteenth-century American painting, setting the sacred moment not inside a dim interior but amid a blaze of Dutch tulip fields under open sky. Hitchcock spent the core of his career in the Netherlands, and his work is defined by a devotion to outdoor light — the way it bleaches colour, softens edge, and transforms an ordinary field into something transcendent. In this canvas, the Virgin kneels in a meadow of flowers while the angel descends from above, the whole scene flooded with the same luminous warmth Hitchcock brought to his secular landscapes. The result is both deeply reverent and unmistakably modern, more akin to the Impressionists than to the chapel tradition the subject usually inhabits. The painting entered the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it has been widely studied as an example of American Impressionism intersecting with spiritual subject matter — a combination rare in the period. A hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas preserves what photography cannot: the layered texture, the loaded brushwork in the flower heads, and the precise gradation of light that gives Hitchcock's sky its sense of infinite depth.
