William Trost Richards spent decades obsessing over the American coastline, first as a meticulous Pre-Raphaelite draftsman and later as a painter of extraordinary atmospheric sensitivity. By 1889, he had refined a technique that captured light not as a surface effect but as a presence — the way moonlight doesn't illuminate so much as it transforms, flattening some forms and giving uncanny depth to others. His coastal nocturnes from this period stand apart from the more dramatic Hudson River School work of his contemporaries; there is quiet authority here rather than spectacle. Richards was so committed to accuracy in his marine studies that he reportedly kept systematic notes on tide times and weather conditions during painting trips to the New England coast, treating the sea with the same documentary seriousness a botanist might bring to fieldwork.
