The Dark Mountain carries the brooding weight of the Maine wilderness Marsden Hartley knew intimately — dark, layered forms pressing upward against a restless sky in a way that feels less like observation and more like memory. Hartley painted this in 1909, the same year Alfred Stieglitz gave him his first solo exhibition at Gallery 291 in New York, an event that announced him as a serious force in American modernism. Working on composition board rather than canvas, he built up dense, textured surfaces using short directional strokes influenced by the divisionism of Giovanni Segantini — a technique that gives the mountain its almost pulsing, interior light. The palette is sombre but never flat, drawing the eye through shadow to find warmth buried in the earth tones beneath. Hartley was deeply shaped by Maine's landscape from childhood, and these early dark mountain pictures are widely understood as formative works — the point where his mystical sensibility and his technical ambitions first converged fully.
