*The Diligence* captures the rumble and strain of early nineteenth-century travel with the kind of grounded humanity that made Nicolas Toussaint Charlet one of the most admired genre painters of his generation. Charlet trained under Théodore Géricault and absorbed from him a deeply felt interest in working people — soldiers, labourers, travellers — rendered without sentimentality or condescension. Where many of his contemporaries reached for heroic subject matter, Charlet found his strength in scenes of ordinary life, built on confident draughtsmanship honed through years as a celebrated lithographer. The result is a painterly directness: forms that feel solidly observed rather than composed, and light that falls as it would in the world rather than as convention demanded. Charlet's lithographic work was so widely reproduced during his lifetime that it shaped how an entire generation of French audiences pictured the Napoleonic era, giving his paintings an almost documentary weight alongside their artistic merit. This hand-painted oil reproduction is made to the same dimensions as the original held at the Art Institute of Chicago, with each passage of tone and texture worked out brushstroke by brushstroke — so the weight of the composition and the warmth Charlet brought to his subjects come through as fully as they do in the museum itself.
