"The Fairies" is a shimmering vision of an enchanted woodland, figures dissolving into deep shadow while jewel-bright flickers of paint seem to pulse with their own inner light. Monticelli spent most of his career in Marseille, working outside the prevailing currents of Paris and developing a style of striking personal idiosyncrasy. His method involved building up the surface with thick, mosaic-like dabs of impasto, layering pigment until certain passages read almost like bas-relief. The result is less a depiction of a scene than an evocation of mood — colour and texture doing work that line and form typically handle, conjuring a world that feels half-remembered rather than directly seen. Vincent van Gogh was among Monticelli's most ardent admirers, calling him a "real colorist" and actively acquiring his work; the debt Van Gogh owed to Monticelli's heavily laden brushwork is widely acknowledged by art historians. The hand-painted oil reproduction preserves what matters most in a painting like this — the physical richness of the surface, the layered depth of the shadows, and the way Monticelli's paint seems to glow from within rather than simply reflect light.
