Vedder's 1887 canvas carries the weight of the cosmos in muted, amber-lit tones, showing the three Fates moving through a night sky scattered with stars they seem to both tend and control. Elihu Vedder was an American expatriate who spent most of his working life in Rome, absorbing the Symbolist currents of late nineteenth-century Europe while holding onto a distinctly personal mythology. His figures are never quite of this world — solid and weighty in form, yet suspended in spaces that feel more dream than earth. In this painting, that tension is at its most concentrated: the Fates are rendered with almost sculptural gravity, yet they float among the stars as though gravity itself has made an exception for them. Vedder had established his reputation for cosmic allegory three years earlier with his celebrated illustrated edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, and the same sense of fatalism and wonder runs through both works. A skilled hand-painted oil reproduction captures what print cannot — the texture of the original brushwork, the layered depth of the night sky, and the subtle warmth Vedder coaxed from a palette that could easily have turned cold.
