His palette tends toward golden afternoon light, and figures are placed not as dramatic protagonists but as natural inhabitants of a world already fully at peace. Richter was closely associated with the Nazarene movement during his Italian years, a circle of German artists who sought to recover the spiritual sincerity they admired in early Renaissance painting, and that influence shows in the painting's composed stillness.
