Known widely by his pen name "Phiz," Browne spent decades as Charles Dickens' principal illustrator, giving visual life to Pickwick, Micawber, and Uriah Heep. This piece, worked in watercolor and black crayon heightened with white and pink gouache on gray wove paper, reveals the softer, more intimate side of an artist usually encountered through engraved prints — the medium allowing a warmth and spontaneity that reproduction rarely captured in his era. The layering of gouache over the tonal ground gives the figure a luminous quality, the pink touches animating the child's face with gentle humor.
