Few paintings capture the controlled chaos of city life with as much wit and precision as Boilly's bustling scene of Parisians hauling their worldly possessions through the streets. Louis-Léopold Boilly was the great chronicler of everyday Parisian life in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and this 1822 work sits comfortably among his finest genre paintings. His technique combines the smooth, almost porcelain finish of French academic painting with an acute eye for comic observation — every figure in the crowded scene has a distinct expression, posture, and social role. Where many of his contemporaries were occupied with history painting and grand allegory, Boilly remained committed to the street, the café, and the domestic interior. Boilly is known to have produced this canvas as one of several large-scale crowd scenes painted during the Restoration period, a time when Paris was rapidly changing and the spectacle of public life was itself becoming a subject worthy of serious art.
