The Old Mill is a quietly compelling early work that reveals George Inness at a pivotal moment — absorbing the grandeur of the Hudson River School while reaching toward something more intimate and earthbound. Inness painted this in 1849, just before his first trip to Europe would expose him to the Barbizon painters and fundamentally shift his approach. Even here, his instinct for atmosphere sets him apart from his contemporaries: where other Hudson River painters favoured sweeping drama, Inness was drawn to the unhurried rhythms of working rural life, rendered with careful attention to light filtering through foliage and the textural weight of weathered timber and still water. The composition has a natural ease that feels less constructed than felt. Inness was largely self-taught, a quality that gave his early work a directness and personal vision that formal training might have smoothed away — the Art Institute of Chicago holds this painting as a representative example of American landscape painting in the mid-nineteenth century.
