Benjamin West's *The Raising of Lazarus* is a work of quiet drama — a preparatory study alive with the tension of a miracle caught at its most human moment, figures pressing forward in disbelief as Lazarus emerges from death. West occupied a singular position in the art world of his era: a Pennsylvania-born painter who became historical painter to King George III and the second President of the Royal Academy. His religious compositions drew on the grand tradition of European history painting, but West had a gift for staging scriptural narrative with emotional directness rather than cold theatricality. This study, worked in pen and brown ink with watercolor and white gouache on laid paper, shows his process in action — the scene squared in graphite for transfer, the light carefully heightened, the composition already feeling monumental even at intimate scale. West used squaring as a precise tool for scaling drawings to large canvases, and seeing those faint grid lines beneath the finished washes gives the work an honest, working quality that finished paintings rarely reveal. Our hand-painted oil reproduction translates West's luminous draftsmanship into the richness of oil on canvas, preserving the weight of each figure and the charged stillness at the composition's centre.
