Felice Giani's *The Three Fates* is a work of commanding elegance — three mythological figures rendered with the kind of assured, searching line that reveals a master draughtsman at the height of his powers. Giani was one of the most prolific and inventive decorative artists of the Italian Neoclassical period, active primarily in Rome and Bologna. Trained under Ubaldo Gandolfi, he developed a drawing style that balanced classical restraint with genuine expressive energy. This work, executed in pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash heightened by white gouache on buff laid paper, demonstrates his ability to build luminous form from a limited tonal palette — the figures emerging from shadow with a quiet drama entirely his own. The subject — Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, the three Fates of Greek mythology who spin, measure, and cut the thread of every mortal life — was a natural fit for Neoclassical sensibilities, and Giani treats it with solemnity rather than spectacle. The work is held in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The hand-painted oil reproduction translates Giani's delicate interplay of light and shadow into the deeper, richer register of oil paint, preserving the gravity and precision of the original while giving the image a new physical presence.
