Venus Healing Aeneas is a luminous example of French neoclassical painting at its most graceful — mythological drama rendered with the calm authority of a sculptor working in light. Merry Joseph Blondel trained under Jacques-Louis David and won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1803, an achievement that sent him to Italy and left a permanent mark on his handling of classical form.
