Painted around 1890, *View From an Attic Room* offers an intimate, elevated glimpse of the world outside — the kind of quietly arresting composition that rewards slow looking. Gustave Loiseau was a self-taught Post-Impressionist who came of age in the orbit of Pissarro and the Pont-Aven painters, absorbing the movement's light-driven sensibility while developing something distinctly his own. His most recognisable technique involves a fine, almost woven crosshatch of brushstrokes that breaks surfaces into vibrating planes of colour — giving his skies, rooftops, and foliage an energy that purely optical blending cannot match. That approach is particularly well-suited to a scene like this one, where the geometry of a window frame plays against the soft, shifting world beyond it. Loiseau remained relatively overlooked during much of his lifetime, gaining wider critical recognition only in the decades following his death in 1935, when collectors began to appreciate the disciplined originality beneath his modest reputation.
