This tender devotional panel carries the quiet intimacy that defined Florentine painting at its most human — the Virgin gazing downward with a composure that feels genuinely felt rather than formally posed. The work belongs to the orbit of Filippo Lippi and his close associate Pesellino (Francesco di Stefano), two painters whose workshops were so intertwined that attributing works between them — and to the skilled hands who learned from both — has occupied scholars for generations. The designation "Lippi-Pesellino Imitator" reflects not a dismissal but an honest acknowledgement of how thoroughly this anonymous master absorbed their shared approach: softly modelled flesh, a delicate fall of light across drapery, and a warmth in the relationship between mother and child that distinguishes Florentine devotional painting from the more hieratic traditions that preceded it. The mixed technique of oil and tempera on panel was itself a mark of the period, as Italian workshops began absorbing Flemish methods without fully abandoning their own. Pesellino died young, in 1457, leaving several works unfinished — a reminder of how much of this tradition passed through workshop hands rather than single named masters.
