Virgin and Child with Two Angels carries the quiet tenderness that defines the best Florentine devotional painting of the fifteenth century — two angels flanking the Madonna with an attentiveness that feels almost human. Francesco Botticini worked in Florence during one of its most fertile artistic periods, absorbing the influence of Verrocchio, Botticelli, and Filippo Lippi without being subsumed by any of them. His figures have a distinctive softness: rounded faces, gentle drapery, expressions that suggest inner life rather than symbolic pose. Working in tempera on panel, Botticini built up his surfaces with the careful layering technique common to early Renaissance practice, achieving luminosity through patience rather than bravura brushwork. For much of art history, Botticini's work circulated under other names — paintings now firmly attributed to him were once given to Botticelli and other more celebrated contemporaries, a confusion that speaks to how naturally his style sat within the Florentine mainstream.
